Residential Facilities for Groups (RFG) or Assisted Living (AL) is a residential alternative that promotes maximum independence through a combination of supportive services and assistance. Services and costs vary depending on the facility, which may also vary in size, style, and optional services. Small family style living or larger complex units may also be co-located or affiliated with a hospital or nursing facility. An RFG/AL facility is required to provide assistance with daily living activities (ADLs), which include eating, bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene; three meals a day; supervision of self-administration of medications; laundry service including personalized laundry, housekeeping and 24 hour staffing.

RFG facilities represent the largest number of health care facilities licensed by the Nevada Bureau of Licensure and Certification (BLC). In 2006, the BLC licensed 311 RFG facilities statewide. RFG facilities range in size from three to 150 beds, and may be licensed for additional endorsements.

The majority of facilities are licensed for the elderly and disabled, at Category 1- Level of Care (residents must be able to leave their bedroom area in 4 minutes or less with no assistance in case of fire or emergency). There are facilities that are also licensed to care for residents with Alzheimer’s disease, Category 2 - Level of Care (residents must be able to leave their bedroom area in 4 minutes or less with assistance in case of fire or emergency). These residents may also have other types of dementia, chronic illness, mental illness and mental retardation. State regulations require caregivers complete a minimum of eight hours of training annually. Medication management training is required for caregivers who assist residents with medications. Additional specific dementia training is required for caregivers working in a facility that has an Alzheimer’s endorsement.
