The Eclectic Observer
What to do with an extra day this month? Why not expand your horizons by trying something new and different? Here are 29 (count ‘em) suggestions for that.
.) If the weather is fine, take a walk along the water. Best bets might be a circuit around the Sparks Marina or a paved section along the Truckee River.
.) Too cold for an outdoor trek? Catch up with a movie you missed at the Grand Sierra's cozy pair of screens on the lower level of the resort.
.) Should it be hibernation weather, why not do something constructive and assemble all the paperwork needed for your income taxes.
.) Give your tastebuds a new experience by sampling an unfamiliar cuisine. You might try Ethiopian, German, Russian, Thai, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indian, Peruvian, Salvadoran, Hawaiian or Persian, as all are offered locally.
.) Take an exploratory stroll through your local library; you're bound to find something unexpected, whether it's a display by a local artist or a special- interest magazine that's new to you.
.) Visit the Nevada Museum of Art, our local gem.
.) Check out the Nevada Historical Society, and consider volunteering for its gift shop or research library.
.) Introduce a grandchild to the delights of the Fleischmann Planetarium.
.) Catch up with the latest additions to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City.
.) Introduce a friend to the Wilbur May Museum in Rancho San Rafael Park and bring a few extra bucks to spend in its marvelous gift shop.
.) Sign up for an AARP Driver Safety class if you're not already receiving a discount on your auto insurance. (Information at www.aarp.org.)
.) Take a Yoga class. The Yellow Pages list several studios in our area. My favorite is the Yoga Pearl in Sparks; call 775/750-7610 for more information.
.) Buy yourself a blooming plant. There's always an interesting selection, with reasonable prices at Trader Joe's.
.) Turn off your radio and TV for 24 hours to enjoy a day without news - a great way to beat the blues. We're halfway there ...
.) Take a treat to a friend; everyone enjoys an unexpected gift.
.) Break your normal beverage routine - tea instead of coffee, apple juice instead of orange, or mineral water instead of soda.
.) Visit an ethnic market. Our area abounds in Asian shops, from tiny to moderately large, and there's probably one close to your neighborhood. Latino grocery stores aren't quite as numerous, but a trip to the King Ranch Market on Wells will take you south-of-the-border in a flash.
.) Check your kitchen pantry and bathroom medicine chest for any products past their sell-by dates - and dump them.
.) Surprise a long-distance friend with a telephone call.
.) Write a letter (not an e-mail!) to a favorite relative.
.) Send a thinking-of-you card to someone who doesn't get out much.
.) Bake a cake ... from scratch!
.) Polish all your mirrors and glassframed pictures.
.) Get the car washed. Even if rain is predicted.
.) Change the furniture around in one room for a new perspective. You can always put it back the way it was if you don't like the new look.
.) Gather up a stack of photos and put them into an album.
.) Have your portrait taken by a professional photographer.
.) Clean out your purse or wallet - get rid of those expired membership cards, credit cards you don't use.
.) Polish your shoes, or toss the tennies in the washer. We only have this extra day once every four years ... make it special, make it count, make it fun.
