Trump Signs Spending Bill - Helping Senior Nutrition

For the first time in 22 years, a funding bill for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services (HHS), and Education was signed into law on time before the fiscal year began October 1, 2018.

President Trump signed the bill on September 28th, which includes a $10 million increase for Older Americans Act Title IIIC nutrition for FY 2019, including $5 million for congregate meals and $5 million for home delivered meals. This is a continuation of the joint work of National Association of Nutrition and Aging Services Programs (NANASP) and Meals on Wheels America.

The FY 2019 legislation included a few other increases for aging related programs:

The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), Medicare State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs), and OAA Title IIIB supportive services, among other aging related programs, were level funded.

The President also signed into law a short-term funding bill called a “Continuing Resolution” or CR, to keep many other government programs running at FY 2018 levels. This Continuing Resolution will ensure funding through December 7 for other programs, such as nutrition programs in the Department of Agriculture and housing programs.
