Ophthalmology Diabetes Raises Women's Glaucoma Risk
An analysis of the health of more than 76,000 women in the Nurses' Health Study reveals that there is an increased risk of developing glaucoma among women with Type 2 diabetes. Glaucoma is the eye condition that is often linked with increased internal eye pressure that can lead to blindness if not treated. Glaucoma is called the “sneak thief of sight” because it does not present symptoms that are readily apparent to those who suffer from it.
It is important, therefore, that patients get regular eye exams especially if they are at high risk for developing glaucoma. Apparently, this high-risk group now includes women with Type 2 diabetes, which is largely fueled by obesity.
Note - while Type 2 diabetes has been linked with women's increased glaucoma risk, it appears that factors unrelated to obesity contribute to the link.
